Nigerian Dating Scam – I’ve been there by Catherine Sheffield, UK I am a widow and after just over two years my friends told me to try internet dating. As I was in my 40’s I thought I would join a site for over plus dating which you pay a subscription for and I thought would be safe. I started chatting to a guy who said he was english born but his father was american. He was working for the united nations as an orthapedic surgeon which I thought was a bit of a story but I went along with it. We were chatting for a few weeks and he suggested going onto messenger as it would save money on subscriptions. He told me things like he was also a widower and told me about his wife etc. This went on for 3 months. I gave him my mobile and he rang me each evening and we would chat for 5 or 10 mins at a cost to him not me. He even rang me when I was on holiday in Spain. When I came back we chatted for another couple of weeks and then he asked me for some money so that he could home and we could be together.

You see an Internet offer for a free one-month trial of some amazing product—often a teeth whitener or a weight-loss program. So the companies spell out the numbers, with no dollar signs; anything that has to do with money or a time frame gets washed into the text. It could be free, or it could resemble a pay service like Boingo Wireless.

Early declarations of being in love. These scams are often financially devastating and have led to the loss of life-savings, destruction of families, and suicide. There are TWO types of the romance scam; the first type is the “virtual” romance; wherein, the victim will likely never meet the scammer in person. Both types tend to take a number of months and both have the same general results. When the scam reaches the point where the victim is not giving up any more money, the scammer may then blackmail, or attempt to blackmail, the victim.
They will threaten to send any photos or web cam video to the victim’s friends, family, work place, and to the public until an amount of money is paid. Worried that your new love interest is too good to be true? Are some things just not adding up? Did they say that there were in love with you very shortly after meeting?

And while everyone is at risk, seniors can be a major target. So what does this have to do with a dating site you ask? Unfortunately, the anonymity of the internet makes it a perfect place for con artists to hide their real intentions while trying to entrap their victims under the guise of romantic interest. By-the-way these rules apply to anyone of any age! Red Flag 1 If someone is too interested — too quickly — in getting to know you beyond the safety of your computer, this could indicate a problem.
If you have just met someone online and they are trying to encourage a meet-up before you really know them, they may not just be overly eager. Let your relationship take a slow and steady natural course of events and let your gut decide when it is right to call them. Remember that when you give out your number, unless it is an unlisted number, you are giving out your address as well. People can easily do a reverse look-up on a phone number and see where you live.
Whether their purpose is dangerous or just desperate, you want to steer clear of both of these. Include the name of the person you are meeting, where you are meeting them and when you expect to be home. Then tell your date that you are doing this. Red Flag 3 If anyone wants you to give them any personal information be extremely guarded.
