Performing an Electrical Test 1 Check the fuel pump fuse. Often, it’s not the pump itself that fails to function, but the power that supplies it. Check in your owner’s manual for the location of the fuse box, then find the fuse that corresponds to the fuel pump. Pull it out and inspect it for signs of failure. If the fuse is blown, it will be broken or burned. If it looks good, check the rest of the fuses related to the fuel system for signs of being blown and replace them, if necessary. If no fuses are blown, have a helper turn the key while you listen for fuel pump relay clicking on. If you need to replace a fuse, make sure you use one with a proper amp rating, never installing one with more amps than necessary.

Jul 09, · I don’t know about Orange County, but up here in Santa Clara County I have never had anyone request that the engine be exposed for a visual check. I usually go to the “Smog Pros” at an Arco station. They just roll the car onto their dyno which is built into the floor, then hook up the OBD -II connector and the sniffer.

A good basic tool that gets the job done. The idle air flow is balanced first. The Uni-Syn is adjusted so that the ball rises about half way up the tube. My symptoms are no power to speak of below rpm. At that point turbo boost occurs and power comes up, though no where near what it should be. The engine revs smoothly but runs out of steam before rpm. I’m left to decide if the problem is the AMM or the O2 sensor. If your B FT throws oil around like mine, the throttle body can easily get crudded up and cause problems exactly as you described. All these were fine, just a dirty throttle body caused the problem.
Use a small flat-bladed screwdriver to loosen the little locking tab on the end of the lower ball-and-socket. One right-hand thread, the other left-hand. The gasket on my car lifted right off with no fuss, but if you have to scrape be sure to use a plastic or wood scraper so as not to damage the aluminum facing.

Take our Tacoma project. When we brought it into California from Massachusetts two years ago, part of that undertaking was a full smog check at a California state-run facility. They made sure the gas cap sealed and that the fuel system could hold a vacuum, and finally they stuck a probe up its tailpipe and made sure the emissions were within California spec. The bone-stock little Tacoma passed with flying colors, barely blipping the emissions output needles.
But two years later when we went in for our biannual smog inspection it was a different story.

However, you are still wrong. Not only is the Prius exempt from smog tests in California, the California smog test procedures are different than what you have described. Rick Auricchio is correct. The car must be run on a dynamometer and a probe inserted in the exhaust pipe to test the actual exhaust gasses in order to perform a smog test in California.
Still, something doesn’t sound right here What if one or more of the sensors is faulty? In California, they stick a probe into the exhaust and test the actual exhaust gases. If the exhaust exceeds standards for that model year, the car needs repair no matter what the OBDII thinks the engine is doing. I lived in California for a few years, but back then I had a car so it was an exhaust output test when I got it smogged. Though I’m pretty sure if you were to take, say, an Escalade to a CA smog station, they would just hook up to the OBDII port under the dash and run the diagnostic program.
I thought the point of the OBDII system was that it was capable of detecting both emissions problems and self-malfunctions.

What are Readiness Monitors? OBD II is a system that has been installed in most and later cars and light trucks, intended to inform the driver of problems in the components that control the engine and transmission. The primary reason OBD II was invented is to reduce smog emissions caused by malfunctions, but it is also valuable as an alert to the driver that something is wrong…something that can affect gas mileage and drivability, or actually cause further damage to the vehicle.
While you are driving your vehicle, its computer is constantly monitoring and running tests on the various sensors, actuators and electrical parts that make the car run properly.
Oct 20, · OBDII port fails to talk to smog test machine Grr! My M5 was in for a California smog check. OBDII port fails to talk to smog test machine I’d run the M5 hard to warm up the oil and we’d hook up and see if it worked. The shop was nervous that they fried my system so they were compelled to keep trying.
Asker’s rating Easy guys It actually depends on your state. In some states, they hook up a device that checks the car for ANY codes and downloads any stored codes. Not all codes are stored – but some are kept in the car’s computer’s memory for 30, 60 or 90 days. The computer how many times that “error code” occurred over a rolling 30, 60 or 90 days. That helps the mechanic diagnose any issues that are causing the lights to come on. If you live in a state where they do this – and it’s a code that is labeled as a smog issue – it won’t pass.
If you live in a state where they check the computer, but only while the vehicle is running dont’ download any codes and it doesn’t set off any codes during the test – it will pass. If it sets off a code during a test – you might ask them if you can reset the code and try again if it’s not busy – they might let you. If you live in a state where they just check the tail pipe and don’t worry about codes – obviously no they won’t know and won’t care.
Go get it done and see what happens. The worst that can happen is you have a problem that doesn’t let you pass inspection. They will give you 20 days or something to show that you have fixed it – and will re-test it for free because you will have already paid for today’s test – so keep the receipt.

Over a three-day period, seven checkpoints were set up throughout Ventura County, including one in Ventura on Loma Vista road. Unlike those used to catch drivers under the influence, the checkpoints were set up as a means by which the state of California could gather information regarding vehicle emissions. The CHP determined which cars to check via a system identifying for certain model-year vehicles. Technicians inserted a probe into the tail pipes of chosen vehicles to determine the levels of emissions and potential problems.
Regardless of the outcome, no fines or violations resulted; rather, technicians on hand informed the drivers of the issues, if any, and sent them on their way. The officers were not checking for license, registration or otherwise, either.

January 27, I recently picked up a ’74 02 and am in the process of recommissioning it after a 29 year nap. I have rebuilt the Weber DGAV and just prior to buttoning it up I noticed in my exploded view of the Holley a check ball that appears to be underneath the pump discharge nozzle accel squirter. In reading through the forum here I read “There are 2 “check valves” in the carb. I understand that one of these balls is actually inside the bolt.
You can hear it when you shake it. I am assuming that “in the carb body” means a second ball beneath the accel squirter bolt that would fall out when that bolt is removed. There was no such 2nd ball. I watched a video on youiube and there was no ball that came out when the bolt was removed from that carb either.
