Route north from Sydney to Queensland From the north side of the Sydney Harbour, the Pacific Highway Highway 1 proceeds north through the suburbs along the railway line, until the outskirts of Hornsby, where it becomes the sleek Sydney-Newcastle Freeway just as the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park begins see North Sydney section for more on the park. The city rail lines, heading all the way to Newcastle, and then into Queensland, follow the road until the waters of the Hawkesbury River at Brooklyn, at which point the train diverges to pass through spectacular scenery inaccessible to those in an automobile.

This stretch of the railway, which is fast, inexpensive and frequent enough to be used by commuters as far north as Gosford, is definitely recommended for the visitor. The Old Pacific Highway continues north as route 83 at a more leisurely pace through Gosford and around Lake Macquarie all the way to Newcastle. The Hawkesbury River As discussed in the section on the Western Suburbs and the towns of Windsor and Richmond, the discovery of the Hawkesbury River by Governor Phillip in , on his third exploration of Broken Bay, was greeted with rejoicing by the fledgling colony, as the land surrounding the river promised fertile ground to plant desperately needed crops.

Phillip named the river for Baron Hawkesbury, Earl of Liverpool. The river originates in the Wollondilly River, which begins near Crookwell in central New South Wales some km west of Sydney, and winds romantically through the countryside, most picturesque, with many inlets, in the 20km before it reaches Broken Bay and the sea. The Aborigines called it Deerubbin.

Intrepid Watkin Tench, First Fleet chronicler who discovered the Nepean River, realised when he revisited the area in that the Nepean and the Hawkesbury were the same river. In his famous Journal of an Excursion Across the Blue Mountains of New South Wales , Barron Field, who usually found Australian landscape unpicturesque, called the river ‘the Nile of Botany Bay’, and British author Anthony Trollope, on his famous visit in , was so taken by the river’s charms that he remarked, ‘in my opinion, the Hawkesbury beats the Mississippi’.

However, if an ocean anchorage is considered only as a potential alternative to remaining at sea for a night, or a pleasant lunch stop, or to make emergency repairs, or to wait for a river bar to settle down, then New South Wales offers many opportunities subject, of course, to prevailing weather and sea conditions. Most ocean anchorages are obvious from afar by their substantial headlands that create and protect their bays from prevailing southeast winds and swell.

However, if a northerly wind is a dying prefrontal system ahead of an imminent southerly change, it can be worthwhile suffering leftover northerly slop in an anchorage that will soon become a southerly haven. Southerly changes may be anything from a whisper to a howler but as long as the anchor holds there is little concern.

In fact, a strong southerly can be preferable for the way it holds an anchored vessel stern-up to the swell that circles around headlands to produce a low northerly bay swell. Light southerly winds reduce the ocean swell, and therefore the bay swell, but they allow a vessel to wander around her anchor and roll every time she rides beam up. The degree of comfort during a southerly wind is also subject to other circumstances, such as whether or not it is more east than southeast and how a particular vessel responds to gusts and lulls.

But these irritants are nothing compared to those confronting a vessel anchored too close to the surf zone where breaking waves are untenable and the sea bed is very poor holding ground. A golden rule in any open road stead is to anchor well clear of the outer surf line where a bonus of good-holding and smoother waves are found. Minimum depths are relevant to bay size and seabed form, but 8-metres low water springs should be seen as minimum.

Jul 18,  · A MAN is dead and three seriously injured others were freed by emergency services at the scene of a horror crash on the NSW Central Coast. .

With two new police strike forces set up yesterday to combat the increased armed robberies across the Hunter, inner-city officers are also battling a dramatic rise in street robberies where individuals are being bashed and threatened with weapons for a few dollars and a phone. Youths as young as 12 have allegedly used stand-over tactics in such attacks, with information released yesterday identifying at least 30 street robberies across the Newcastle City local area command since September.

That figure includes two more incidents on Tuesday night, one in the city when a year-old was punched in the head before his wallet was taken and another when a man refused to hand over his valuables when a youth armed with a knife threatened him. Newcastle City crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Humphrey said he was not sure if the attackers fully understood that they were risking their freedom.

We have received a second report that these three youths attacked another man in the Gosford area on the night of November The man was approached by a youth and they chatted.
